What a battery has to do on a Byford block

Byford sits at the end of long rural feeders. Houses are further apart and further from the transformer, and an outage out here runs longer than it does in a suburb with a substation down the road. That changes the question. It is not only how much power you use overnight, it is how long you want to keep going when the street goes down, and those two numbers give very different answers.

Then there is the shed. Most Byford properties have one and plenty of them have a workshop in it, and a shed with real load in it changes the sizing before anyone has looked at the roof.

The switchboard, and what comes off the roof

On the Byford jobs we have done, the switchboard came into it about half the time. Boards on the older blocks were built for a house, not for a house plus a battery inverter plus a workshop, and there is often no room left in the enclosure for what a battery needs. It is a known, quotable cost when somebody looks first and a bad surprise on the morning of the install.

Removal comes up here too. More than one of these jobs meant taking an older system out as part of putting the new one in, including solar hot water panels that had been on the roof since long before anyone thought about storage.

A whole system, or a battery on its own

Byford splits about evenly between the two. Some of these jobs are a battery going onto solar that is already there. Just as many are a full solar and battery system going on together, and on a block with roof to spare that is very often the better buy: the panels are the cheapest part of what you are putting in, and they are what makes the battery worth charging.

Which one you are is not something you have to work out yourself, and it is not something we can tell from an aerial photo. It comes down to the age and condition of the existing inverter, what is left on the roof, and what the bills say. If the honest answer is that a battery on its own does the job, that is what you will be quoted.

What a Byford battery job usually involves

  • Sizing done off your bills and your actual usage, including the shed.
  • The switchboard assessed before you are quoted, not after.
  • Backup circuits chosen with you, so the right things stay on in an outage.
  • Removal and disposal of the old system where one is being replaced.
  • Our own licensed installers. Never subcontracted.
  • Compliance paperwork and network approval handled for you.

SolArk Electrical installed a Sigenergy solar and battery system on our house for us. They were extremely punctual and kept us in the loop the whole way through the process. They were very efficient and completed the work well within the specified time frame.

I can highly recommend Solark as a solar installer. From my initial conversations with Jack where he patiently answered all of my questions and helped me choose the right system for our needs, through to Luke and his team onsite doing the install, the entire process has exceeded my expectations.

FAQs

Byford battery questions

How big a battery do I actually need in Byford?

Bigger than the same house would need closer in, and the reason is the outages rather than the usage. Long rural feeders mean longer interruptions, so the sizing question here is really how long you want to ride through, not just how much you use overnight. We work it out from your bills and your usage pattern, and we tell you if a smaller system covers you.

Can the battery run the shed as well as the house?

Usually yes, and on a Byford block it is often the point. What decides it is what is actually in the shed. A workshop with a welder or a compressor is a different sizing conversation to a shed with a fridge and a light in it, so we would rather see it than guess.

Will my switchboard need doing too?

On Byford jobs, more often than not. Boards out here were built for a house and there is frequently no room left for what a battery needs. We assess it before you are quoted so it is a line on the quote rather than a phone call on install day.

We are a long way from the transformer. Does that matter?

It does, and it is worth measuring rather than assuming. Distance affects the voltage at your house, and voltage affects how a battery inverter behaves. It is one of the checks we do on site before quoting out here.

Should I add panels at the same time?

Often, yes, and on a Byford block it is usually the question worth asking. Panels are the cheapest part of a system to add while the installers are already on site, and a battery is only as useful as what charges it. If your roof has room and your array is undersized for the storage you want, doing both together costs less than doing them a year apart.

Do you charge extra to come out to Byford?

No. Byford is inside our normal service area and we are there most weeks. There is no travel surcharge and no minimum job size.
