Really impressed with the service from Solark's electricians. They arrived on time, were friendly, professional, and did a great job installing our pendant light. What stood out was their attention to detail. They offered to check our smoke alarms and aircon filters without being asked.Katrina MilesLighting, Perth

Signs to look for
Signs a safety check is due
RCDs and smoke alarms both fail without telling you. These are the moments to check them.
You are leasing out a property and the safety switch and smoke alarm checks are due.
You are selling and want the safety switches and smoke alarms sorted before settlement.
The smoke alarms are past their date or nobody knows when they were fitted.
Nobody has pressed the test button on the safety switches in years.
An older house with no record of when the wiring was last checked.
What is included
What the check covers
Two devices, both of which fail silently
An RCD that has seized does not tell you. A smoke alarm past its expiry date still chirps when you press the button and still may not detect smoke. Both are the sort of thing you find out about at the worst possible moment, and both take minutes to test properly.
We do this work regularly for a property manager across a rotating slate of managed rentals. The check is the same one worth doing on your own home.
They offered to check our smoke alarms without being asked.
Landlords and property managers
Rental properties in WA carry their own RCD and smoke alarm requirements, with obligations at change of tenancy and on sale. We do this at a flat fee per property, always confirmed up front, and we work through a slate of properties in a run rather than treating each one as a separate call-out. There is more detail on our property managers page.
Buying or selling
If you are buying, a safety check is a cheaper way to find out about the switchboard than the first winter. If you are selling, having it documented removes an argument.
- Every RCD tested for trip time and trip current, not just the test button.
- Circuit coverage checked, because plenty of boards protect some circuits and not others.
- Smoke alarms tested, and expiry dates checked against the date on the unit.
- Switchboard inspected for heat damage, loose terminations and correct labelling.
- Earthing and bonding checked, including at the water service where it applies.
- Visible wiring, outlets and fittings checked for damage.
- A written record of what was tested and the results.
How it works
How the job runs
Book the visit
One property or a portfolio. For rentals we contact the tenant and arrange access ourselves rather than routing it back through you.
Test, do not guess
Every RCD tested for trip time and trip current with an instrument. The test button tells you the button works, not that the device does.
Alarms and board
Smoke alarms tested and expiry dates checked against the unit. Switchboard inspected for heat damage, loose terminations and correct labelling.
Written record
A report of what was tested and the results, sent through without being chased. Anything found outside scope is quoted separately before anyone touches it.
Aftercare
The same number to ring if anything is not right afterwards. Your guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law apply to our work, as our Warranty Terms set out.
FAQs
Questions we get asked
How often should RCDs be tested?
Press the test button yourself every few months. A proper trip time and trip current test with an instrument is a job for an electrician, annually is sensible, and it is the test that catches a seized device.
How many RCDs does a WA home need?
Requirements depend on the age of the installation and whether the property is rented. Plenty of older Perth boards have one RCD covering some circuits and nothing on the rest. We will tell you what you have and what is required for your situation.
When do smoke alarms expire?
Most have a ten year design life with the expiry printed on the unit. Past that they get replaced regardless of whether they still beep when tested.
Do you provide a certificate?
You get a written record of what was tested and the results, and the compliance paperwork for any work we carry out.

Not sure your safety switches work?
Neither are most people, which is the problem. Book a check and find out.
