Signs to look for

Signs it is time for a wall charger

A wall charger turns charging from an overnight wait into something you stop thinking about.

  • The car charges from a normal power point and it takes all night to get useful range back.

  • A new EV is on order and you want the charger on the wall before it arrives.

  • The switchboard is old or full and you are not sure it can take another big circuit.

  • You have solar and want the car charging from your own panels through the day.

  • A lead across the driveway or through a window is how the car gets charged now.

What is included

What we check and install

The part the charger supplier does not mention

A wall charger is a 7kW continuous load, and in some houses a 22kW one. That is not a power point. It needs a dedicated circuit, correctly sized cable for the run, the right protection, and a switchboard and incoming supply that can carry it alongside the oven, the air conditioning and everything else.

Which is why the quote you got online is often not the price you end up paying. We look at the board and the cable run first, then give you a number that holds.

Solar and EV charging together

If you have solar, charging in the middle of the day is where the real saving is. Load management and solar-aware charging can be set up so the car takes surplus generation rather than pulling from the grid. On some recent jobs the cleanest answer was a single unit combining inverter, battery and EV DC charging, which is what we installed in Ascot alongside a 26.6kW array.

Done by electricians who will also tell you if the switchboard cannot carry it.

Which charger?

We will install the unit you have bought, or advise on one. The questions that matter are single or three phase, whether you want load management, whether you need it to talk to your solar, and whether you need billing or access control for a workplace. Brand matters less than getting those four right.

Businesses and workplaces

Workplace and commercial charging brings in load management across multiple bays, access control and metering. We scope those on site rather than from a brochure.

  • Your incoming supply, main switch rating and available capacity.
  • Switchboard capacity, and an upgrade quoted separately if it is needed.
  • Cable route and length, because a long run changes the cable size and the price.
  • Dedicated circuit with the correct protection for a continuous EV load.
  • Charger mounted where the cable actually reaches the car's port.
  • Load management or solar-aware charging configured where the unit supports it.
  • Tested, certified and the app or account set up before we leave.

How it works

How the job runs

  1. Two photos

Your switchboard, and where the car actually parks. Those two things decide the price, and they are what online quotes never ask for.

  2. Capacity check

Main switch rating, existing load, spare ways in the board and the cable run length. This is the step that catches people out after they have already paid a deposit.

  3. Install and circuit

Dedicated circuit with the right protection for a continuous EV load, charger mounted where the cable comfortably reaches the port.

  4. Configured before we go

Tested, certified, app or account set up, and load management or solar-aware charging configured if your unit supports it.

  5. Aftercare

The same number to ring if anything is not right afterwards. Your guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law apply to our work, as our Warranty Terms set out.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

How much does an EV charger installation cost in Perth?

It depends almost entirely on the cable run and whether your switchboard needs work, which is why online quotes move once someone looks at the board. Send us a photo of your switchboard and tell us where the car parks, and you will get a real number.

Can my switchboard handle a charger?

Often yes, sometimes not without work. It comes down to your main switch rating, your existing load and whether there is a spare way in the board. This is the check that catches people out.

How fast will it actually charge?

The useful way to think about it is kilometres an hour rather than kilowatts. A 7kW charger adds roughly 40 kilometres of range an hour, so overnight it fills almost any car from almost any state. If you drive further than that in a day, or two cars share the charger, faster units exist and are worth talking about.

Single phase or three phase, and what about DC?

Three phase supports faster AC charging than single phase, and DC charging is faster again with its own design and installation requirements. Which of them makes sense at your place comes down to the supply, the switchboard and how you actually drive. That is a look in the meter box, not a guess from a web page, and it is part of the quote rather than an extra.

Can it charge from my solar?

Yes, with a charger that supports it. Set up properly, the car takes surplus generation during the day instead of importing from the grid, which is where the actual saving lives.

Do you install Tesla wall connectors?

Yes, along with other major brands. We will install a unit you supply or advise on one that suits your setup.

Great clear presentation promoting hands on service and expertise. Outlined all the benefits of the product and walked us through the process. It wasn't the cheapest quote but I felt confident that SolArk would be the best option. Installation and delivery matched the presentation.
