Signs to look for

Signs commercial solar is worth scoping

On a business tariff, when you draw power matters as much as how much.

  • Demand charges make up a bigger share of the bill than the energy itself.

  • Most of the load runs through the day while the roof does nothing.

  • Refrigeration, compressors or air conditioning run right through trading hours.

  • A lease, an expansion or new equipment is about to change what the site draws.

  • Nobody has looked at your interval data to see when the peaks actually happen.

What is included

What a commercial job includes

A business bill is not a bigger house bill

On most commercial tariffs you are charged twice. Once for the energy you use, and again for your highest demand in the billing period, measured over a short window. That second charge is set by one moment in the month, and a system designed against your annual consumption can miss it entirely.

So the first thing we ask for is your interval data, which your retailer will give you on request. It shows your load in half hour blocks across a year. Read against your trading hours it tells us when your demand peaks, whether solar lands on that peak or beside it, and whether storage is what actually moves your bill. A walk around the site cannot tell us any of that.

The roof is the last thing we look at

Plenty of commercial solar is scoped the other way round: count the usable roof, fill it, and price it. It produces a system that generates well and a bill that barely moves, because generation was never the constraint.

We work back from the bill. What your load actually does through the day, what your demand charge is set by, what your operating hours are, and what you are planning that will change any of it. The roof then has to accommodate the answer, and where it will not, that is a finding we give you rather than a corner we cut.

One licence across the whole job

SolArk is an electrical contractor that specialised into solar rather than a solar company that later hired an electrician. On a commercial site that distinction stops being philosophical: the switchboard, the mains, the metering, the protection and the network paperwork are most of the job, and they are the parts that hold a project up when they are somebody else's responsibility.

We do the electrical work ourselves, under our own licence, on the same job. There is nobody to hand your site to and nobody to point at.

A commercial customer looking at a battery that did not suit their situation. Their words afterwards: you've talked us out of it.

Battery storage for a business

A commercial battery earns its keep differently to a home one. At home it is mostly about using your own solar after dark. On a business tariff it is usually about the demand charge, and about what a power outage costs you per hour if your operation cannot ride one out.

Both of those are answerable from your data rather than from opinion, which means the honest answer is sometimes no. We have given that answer to a commercial customer who came to us wanting a battery, and their own words afterwards were that we had talked them out of it. If the numbers do not support it, or a smaller change to how the site runs does the same job, we will say so.

Commercial electrical, not only solar

Switchboard and mains upgrades, lighting, fault finding, compliance testing and the reactive calls that cannot wait until next week. We already run ongoing electrical work for a Perth agency across a rotating slate of properties, to a booked window and a flat fee, which is the same discipline a business site needs.

Working around your trading hours

A shutdown is usually the expensive part of a commercial job, not the equipment. Where the site allows it we stage the work so the disruptive steps land outside trading, and where a shutdown is genuinely unavoidable you get the window in writing before we start rather than a phone call on the morning.

  • Twelve months of billing and interval data read before anything is designed.
  • Demand charges assessed separately from consumption, because they are billed separately.
  • Roof, structure, switchboard, mains and metering all assessed on site.
  • Network application and approvals handled as part of the job.
  • Our own licensed electricians on site. Never subcontracted.
  • Installation staged around your trading hours where the site allows it.
  • Monitoring configured and handed over to someone who will actually use it.
  • All certificate and rebate paperwork lodged for you.

How it works

How the job runs

  1. Send twelve months of bills

Plus interval data from your retailer if you can get it, which they will supply on request. It is the one document that tells us what your demand charge is actually set by.

  2. We read the load, not the roof

When your site draws power against when it trades, where the demand peak sits, and whether solar lands on it or beside it. This is the step that decides whether the project is worth doing at all.

  3. Site assessment

Roof and structure, switchboard, mains, metering and protection, plus what the network will approve at your connection. Confirmed on site by one of our electricians before anything is quoted.

  4. Staged around trading

Installed, commissioned, network paperwork lodged and monitoring handed over. Disruptive steps planned outside your trading hours where the site allows it.

  5. Warranty and aftercare

A 25 year workmanship warranty on our solar and battery installation work, from commissioning, and the same number to ring afterwards. Warranty Terms apply.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

How do you size a commercial system?

From your interval data and your demand charges, not from your roof area or your annual consumption. Your retailer will supply interval data on request, and it is the single most useful thing you can send us. Sizing is then confirmed on site by our own team before anything is quoted.

What does commercial solar cost?

We quote per site. A figure produced before anyone has read your load profile, looked at your switchboard or checked what the network will approve is a guess, and guesses are what make commercial quotes impossible to compare against each other. Send twelve months of bills and you will get a real number.

Do you handle the network application?

Yes, as part of the job. Commercial connections carry approval conditions that residential ones do not, and finding that out after equipment is on site is the most common way a commercial project stalls.

Can you work outside our trading hours?

Usually, and we plan for it rather than treating it as a favour. Where a shutdown cannot be avoided you get the window agreed in writing before we start.

Is a battery worth it for a business?

Sometimes, and the deciding factor is normally your demand charge rather than your total consumption. It is answerable from your data. If a smaller system is better, we will tell you, and if the numbers do not support a battery at all we will tell you that too.

Do you do the electrical work as well?

Yes. We are a licensed electrical contractor, so switchboards, mains, metering, lighting, fault finding and compliance are part of what we do rather than something we bring somebody else in for.

What areas do you cover?

Perth metro and surrounds, for both commercial and residential work.

Jack came and did a solar and battery system installation at my business in Stirling. His communication was top notch from the beginning, and the work was completed efficiently in a timely manner. Solark handled all the paperwork for the government rebates which was fantastic.

Called out at short notice for some urgent work. Fast, professional, courteous and sensibly priced. Can't recommend Jack and SolArk highly enough.
