Signs to look for

Signs of a fault worth finding

Tell us what happens and when it happens. The pattern usually tells us where to start.

  • The safety switch trips and you cannot work out what sets it off.

  • Part of the house has no power while the rest works normally.

  • Lights flicker or buzz on one circuit or across the house.

  • A power point or switch feels warm or has marks around it.

  • The bore pump, oven or air conditioner stopped and the breaker will not stay on.

  • Someone else could not find it or replaced parts without fixing it.

What is included

How a fault finding call runs

Why fixed price fault finding is a trap

A fixed price for an unknown fault is either padded to cover the worst case, or it runs out and the conversation gets awkward halfway through. Neither is good for you. Hourly, with the meter stated up front and a fixed price once the fault is identified, is the honest structure.

The one to know about before you ring

An intermittent fault is the hard one. If it only happens sometimes, it may well not happen while an electrician is standing in front of it, and no amount of testing conjures a fault that is not presenting. We will still narrow it down, rule things out and tell you what we have eliminated, and sometimes the answer is that we need to come back when it is doing it. That is worth knowing before we come rather than after.

What we chase

Safety switches that trip at random or at the same time every day, circuits that are dead with no obvious cause, lights that flicker or dim when something else starts, burning smells, warm switch plates, buzzing, and the classic: it only happens when it rains.

The rate is stated before we come, and the repair is a fixed price once we know what the fault is.

Faults we have traced

A bathroom exhaust fan fire caused by cable squashed against the metal duct instead of routed through its cutout, with dog hair in the roof space accelerating it. A burnt neutral in Brookdale. A faulty RCBO in Huntingdale. A bore pump that had stopped, back running the next morning. Naming the actual cause matters, because electrical fault is not a diagnosis.

  • You describe what happens and when. Patterns are the biggest clue we get.
  • We isolate circuit by circuit and test rather than replacing parts hopefully.
  • You get told what the fault actually is, in plain terms, not just what was replaced.
  • A fixed price for the repair, before we do it.
  • Anything else unsafe that we notice gets pointed out, whether or not you fix it now.

How it works

How the job runs

  1. Tell us the pattern

What happens, and when. Same time every day, only in the rain, only with the dryer running. The pattern is the single most useful thing you can give us.

  2. Diagnose, hourly

We isolate and test circuit by circuit rather than replacing parts hopefully. Charged by the hour, because a fault nobody has found yet cannot honestly be quoted.

  3. Fixed price for the fix

Once we know what it actually is, you get a fixed price before we do the repair, and the cause named in plain terms rather than "electrical fault".

  4. Repaired and made safe

Fixed, tested, and anything else unsafe we noticed pointed out to you whether or not you deal with it today.

  5. Aftercare

The same number to ring if anything is not right afterwards. Your guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law apply to our work, as our Warranty Terms set out.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

My safety switch keeps tripping. What is it?

Most often a faulty appliance, water where it should not be, or degraded insulation in a cable. When it trips is the most useful information you can give us: same time daily points one way, only in the rain points another.

How long does fault finding take?

Anywhere from twenty minutes to a few hours. Intermittent faults take longest because they have to be reproduced. We keep you informed as we go rather than presenting a surprise at the end.

What if the fault is not happening when you arrive?

It happens, and it is the most common reason a job like this takes longer than anyone wants. We test what we can, eliminate what we can, and tell you plainly where we got to. Sometimes the answer is to come back while it is doing it. Anything you can tell us about when it happens, and what else is running at the time, makes that far less likely.

What if it turns out not to be ours to fix?

If it is something outside our scope, such as a network supply problem on the pole, we tell you what we found and who to call. You are not left holding a diagnosis you cannot use.

Is it an emergency?

Burning smells, scorch marks, warm switch plates or sparking are. Turn the circuit off at the board and ring us. A single dead power point can wait until tomorrow.

Super reliable and friendly service from Jack. Found my problem and had me chase up my warranty rather then just charge me straight away. Will definitely use Jack again.

Jack managed to arrive on site the very next morning and managed to get my bore pump up and running. Always good service from solark.
