Jack was quick to respond to our battery query. He provided honest useful information about AC vs DC battery systems. The time is not right yet to add a battery, as there is life left in our existing system.Helen MillerBattery enquiry

A whole system, or a battery on its own
Leeming runs about evenly between the two, and which one suits you is not decided by the panels. It is decided by the inverter, and by the switchboard behind it. Both can be checked before you spend anything.
Leeming went solar early, so a lot of the arrays here are a decade old and undersized for the storage people now want. Where that is the case, adding panels while the installers are already on site is usually the better buy: panels are the cheapest part of the system, and a battery is only worth as much as what charges it. Where the existing inverter is near the end of its life, replacing it as part of the same job beats doing the two things two years apart, because it is one set of approvals, one install and one lot of access.
None of that is a foregone conclusion. If your array is healthy and the right size, you will be quoted a battery and nothing else.
Tile roofs, and why that matters here
Most of the Leeming roofs we work on are tile, often with the array split across two faces. It matters as soon as a job means adding to or touching the array, and it is one of the reasons we would rather look at the roof than quote it off an aerial photo.
Which circuits stay on
Backup is the part most people have not thought about until they are asked. A battery does not automatically keep the whole house running in an outage, and sizing one so it could is usually not the best use of the money. What happens instead is that you choose the circuits: the fridge, some lights, the power points that matter, the internet. We go through that with you rather than picking for you, because which circuits matter is not something we can know from the meter box.
What a Leeming battery job usually involves
- The existing array, inverter and switchboard all checked before you are quoted.
- An honest answer on whether panels should go on at the same time.
- Backup circuits chosen with you, so the right things stay on in an outage.
- Sizing done off your bills and your usage, not off the roof.
- Our own licensed installers. Never subcontracted.
- Compliance paperwork and network approval handled for you.

Where a battery goes gets decided on site, because it has to be serviceable, inside the temperature range the manufacturer allows, and somewhere you can live with looking at.

FAQs
Leeming battery questions
Can I add a battery to the solar I already have?
Often, yes. What decides it is the existing inverter and the switchboard rather than the panels, and both get checked before you are quoted. The thing worth knowing is that on an older Leeming array the better answer is frequently a battery and some extra panels together, because the array was sized for a time when exporting paid well and storage was rare.
How big a system can I actually have?
That is a site question, not a website question. What your property will carry depends on the supply, the switchboard, the roof and what the network approves, and no honest answer to it can be given from a web page. Someone from our team works it out with you and tells you what is possible before anything is quoted.
Will the whole house stay on in a blackout?
Not usually, and sizing a battery so it could is rarely the best use of the money. You choose which circuits stay live. Most people pick the fridge, some lighting, a few power points and the internet, and that combination runs a long way on a normal battery.
Where does the battery actually go?
Outside against a wall, or inside the garage, depending on the house and on the temperature range the manufacturer allows. It has to be serviceable, protected from a knock, and somewhere you can live with looking at. The one in the photograph above sits outside on the brick with a bollard in front of it. We work it out on site with you rather than deciding for you.
Do you charge extra to come out to Leeming?
No. Leeming is inside our normal service area, so there is no travel surcharge and no minimum job size to get us there.
