Batteries
Is a solar battery worth it in Perth?
For some Perth houses a battery pays. For others the honest answer is to wait. Here is how to tell which one you are.
If your panels are sending surplus power to the grid all day and you are buying it back at night, a battery is the obvious next step. Obvious is not the same as worthwhile, and whether it is worthwhile for your house comes down to a handful of things you can check before you talk to anyone.
Home battery installations across Australia have climbed steeply, helped along by the federal discount on eligible systems. Plenty of people are installing them. That is not by itself a reason for you to.
Why the evening is the whole argument
Your panels generate most in the middle of the day, which for a lot of households is exactly when nobody is home. Then everyone arrives, and the oven, the air conditioning, the hot water and the washing all land in a four hour window after generation has dropped off.
A battery moves the surplus from the first window into the second. The more your life looks like that, the better a battery does. If you are home all day and already consuming most of what you generate, there is less surplus to shift and the case is weaker.
What decides the number on your quote
Not the battery alone. Capacity, the technology, your existing inverter and switchboard, whether you want backup, and what electrical work the site needs all feed into it.
We do not publish a price range for storage, and we would treat anyone who does with caution. A range wide enough to be true is too wide to be useful, and a narrow one is only achievable by leaving things out of the scope. Your bills, your roof and your switchboard produce a real figure. Nothing else does.
The existing system matters more than people expect. Adding storage to solar installed some years ago can mean the inverter has to be looked at, and that is a materially different job to a straight battery install.
When a battery makes sense
The case is strongest when most of these are true:
- You export a meaningful amount of solar during the day
- You use a meaningful amount of power after sunset
- You want to rely less on the grid in the evening peak
- You intend to stay in the house long enough for it to pay
- Keeping essentials running through an outage has real value to you
Where those are not true, storage still works. It just takes longer to pay for itself, and you deserve to be told that before you sign rather than after.
What to compare before you commit
Look past headline capacity to usable capacity, round trip efficiency, warranty terms including any throughput limit, expected service life, monitoring, and compatibility with what you already have.
And check the state of your existing system first. If your panels are underperforming, a battery inherits that problem: there is less surplus to store, and the storage you paid for sits partly idle. A health check on the existing array is cheap by comparison and occasionally makes the battery unnecessary for another year or two.
How to decide
Start with your electricity bills, your generation figures, your export volumes and the hours your house actually draws power. Then ask an installer to assess the inverter, the panels, the switchboard and the consumption before recommending anything.
That order matters. It is the difference between a system designed for your house and a system sold from a price list.
So, is a battery worth it? For the right Perth home, comfortably. For others, not yet. We have told customers it was not yet, including one commercial customer whose own words afterwards were that we had talked them out of it. It cost us the sale and we would do it again.
FAQs
Questions on this
How much does a home battery cost?
We quote per job rather than publishing a figure. What you pay depends on capacity, the equipment, your existing inverter and switchboard, whether you want backup, and the electrical work the site needs. Send your last power bill and you will get a real number with any rebate already deducted.
How do I know what size battery I need?
From your daily consumption, your solar generation and how much you use after dark. It is assessed on site by our own team, because it is not answerable from a roof photo or a postcode.
How long does a battery installation take?
It depends on the existing solar and electrical setup, and whether the inverter or switchboard needs attention at the same time. We give you a timeframe after assessing the property, not before.

Not sure a battery is worth it yet?
Send your last few bills. If the answer is wait, that is what you will get, and you will get the reasoning with it.
